Anyone have an opinion of a good compact digital camera for fishing? I was looking at the Sony Cybershot W150 or maybe a W170. Seems like a nice little point and click.

For around $300 Pentax and Olympus make water proof little digitals.

Their only drawback is the lack of a viewfinder for sunny conditions.

I like Canon cameras for the most part but they don't make any WP compact digitals yet.

That Sony W170 is a nice camera: it has a fast shutter response time, good lens, face detection and optical image stabilization. I do like the colors that come out of the Canons better though. Both Canon and Sony are the top selling brands in digital cameras. The Pentax waterproofs are great for taking pictures while fishing, no need to worry whether you drop your camera in the water... so you might want to check them out as well.

I hope my two cents has helped....bye the way I've been selling digital cameras at Best Buy for about 3.5 years so I have some experience with this subject.....

Good luck with your decision and if you have questions for me feel free to ask me.

Hey Adam/Bill,

Your opinions are noted and appreciated. I would tend to agree with you Adam as well. One department over here has a little cannon digital and I would say the color quality out of that thing wins hands down even compared to our Nikon D100 with a macro lens.

My other concern would be taking pictures of flies. I bought the wife a sony cybershot dsc H9 which is great, but the macro function just doesn't work for me. I can't get a nice close shot for the life of me like I could with the older camera (older cybershot). Do cannons offer a pretty good macro feature?

thanks,

Jeff

Canons do a great job with macro, just make sure that whatever you get has optical image stabilization. I suggest that you look at the SD870IS, great macro work and the wider angled lens is cool for landscape and wide-angle macro shots.

I really enjoy my Pentax Optio 7.1. i've used it under water. It's Class 8 underwater/Class 5 dust proof. 3x optical zoom. Easy to use and about 250 bucks.

I shoot a Nikon D-50 but on the river I more often use my Sony DSC 90. It is only 4.1 MP but it takes amazing photos.. well, maybe not amazing but certainly adequate...

I also really like the 2-inch LCD view window and the fact that you can buy a used one on ebay for about $30.

I imagine that a newer model in an 8.1 or 10.1 would be even better for not much more money.

Here's some photos taken with the Sony...
