Hey Gang. I know its been a while.

Just wanted to drop a quick report from 'The Great White North...ehh'.

The fishing was great, the weather was gorgeous (serious sunburn) and the scenery has to be seen to be believed.

If youve never caught coho in shallow, salt water, you might wanna try it some day....dont forget your pace maker! These fish would run 100 yards of backing every time. In the shallow water, theyd just flat out leave the zip code.

Heres a few photos to tell the rest of the story.

WOW!!!!!....  That second fish has some real shoulders on it. :D :D

Before they became a rareity in California, I used to catch quite few Silvers in estuaries along the coast from Marin thru Del Norte Counties.... Wonderful fish. 8) 8) 8)

Awesome Jay, sounds like you had a great trip! Beautiful fish and very cool to hear you had many opportunities to inspect the backing on your reels. :D

Thanks Jay

Great looking trip.

It would be great to hook them like you did in the saltwater.

Where should we go?

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Bill, Coho are widespread along the northern washington, canadian and alaskan coast. I fish for them on vancouver island. They are a bit of a crap shoot in the estuaries. They are pretty weather oriented in that they like rain for them to get excited about moving inshore and thinking about freshwater. I would really like to start exploring up the BC mainland coast to find some fisheries that arent so heavily pressured. There are definitly many untapped gems for those willing to put in the miles.

The numbers are pretty low thus far up there...but its a little early. It seems like the early fish are a little brighter and somewhat more 'grabby'. Thats why I like to go early. Plus, the armies of anglers havnt shown up yet and the weather is a bit more predictable.

I will not disclose the location I fish as it has been getting very crowded there. Some extremely inconsiderate anglers I might add.

Coho drive me crazier than any fish. They are very fickle biters. They change their mind from one second to the next...24/7.

Jay,

If you ever get the itch for more consistent action on silvers, I know a great Coho river in Alaska I used to guide on. You can do a DIY float for pretty cheap. If the run is good, 20 fish days are easy, and 60 fish days a great possibility. Throw in tons of rainbows, dollies, pinks (on even years) and chums, and you are talking a great trip.

If you are interested let me know I can fill you in on details. I've done it so many times I am not really interested in going back, but for most folks, it's a trip of a lifetime.

For the past 20 plus years around Sacramento we have many anglers who either fish the Karlik River on Kodiak Island, Alaska or the Tsiu River south of Cordova, Alaska.

These trips are not to bad $$$ but the fishing is unreal.......it is all wading.

Most go in September. Later the weather is worse but the Steelhead come in too.
