Does anyone on this board have any experience with this lens? I am thinking about buying one soon.

Is the maximum aperture your main concern or are you looking for the wide angle?

If it is the latter both Ben Bolden and I can suggest the Tokina 12-24mm, though Ben's endorsement is worth a whole lot more than mine. 8)

Josh, I am looking for both really. I have heard that Tokina makes a nice wide angle lens but I need something a little bit more versatile than a 12-24....however I would love to have a real wide angled lens like that eventually.

What is the max aperture and the minimum focusing distance on that Tokina?

f/4 & 30 cm

I understand about the versatility issue. My second lens is a 55-250mm, so I am only out from 25-54mm.

Adam, if you could describe what you plan to use the tamron for most often i think i may be able to add some decent input.

The Tamron 17-50 2.8 is an outstanding lens that offers versatility. You will be thrilled with the results.

I can also cast another vote for the Tokina 12-24 f/4, but as you mentioned, it is a very specific lens.

Ben, I know that I want a relatively wide angle lens but I want something more versatile than a lens that stops at/around 30mm. I like landscapes and I like to take wide-angled macro/close up shots with a smaller DOF. The range of the Tamron lens I asked about will be fine, I just wanted to know if any of you guys have had experience with that lens.

Amador, thanks for your input. I've read some good review about this lens and was interested to see if anybody here had similar results. Do you mind posting a reply with a few samples from that lens?

If you know that you want that range then that is great, from everything i have heard and seen the tamron is really a great lens. I have never used it though so i can't comment on it first hand.
