Had a nice phone conversation yesterday with one of my main fly fishing mentors, Al Perryman.
Al has been fishing almost every morning before work on the Upper Rogue River near Medford for the past month.
He is rotating between several different smaller Anderson Spey rods with Beulah Spey lines and a 15' Rio tapered mono Steelhead leader and some unweighted sparce tradition winged flies in size 3 and 5. Sounded like mostly darker patterns of his own concoction.
Al says the fishing is only good for about an hour and a half every morning but it has been rewarding. He says that swinging in the surface produces mostly wild Steelhead that are very powerful with the water temp around 57 degrees.
Al says it is probably not worth driving up there for a hours worth of fishing in the morning but it's great for locals.

We should be doing this on the Lower American River now from Watt Avenue down stream to the Paradise Beach/Cal Expo area.
