Went back up for more with Scotty again this weekend. This time Red Lake was the target.
We started out right by the dam where we saw rising trout very aggressivley. With high hopes and, I might add, a little smugness on my part we prepared to clean house.

Well, um, uh, we got our _ _ es handed to us. With trout rising all around us we couldn't buy a bite. Maybe one of you Red Lake regulars can help us out?

After like an hour and a half of trying to figure it out we deciced to go see if the fish at the far end of the lake were sane.
They were but only kinda. We never really dialed 'em in, but we did catch a few on olive wooly buggers. I also caught one Brookie on a pt dropper.

Hit some small ponds later for Brookies, that's always fun. :P

Got a few pics from Red Lake.

Here's one of my Cutts.

This was the first and probably only time Ed has taken me fishing and I didn't lose weight due to the fact we didn't climb any mountains or bike from Mars to Venus. But other than that another great day on the water. Not many fish, as Ed stated we got our but*s handed to us by a bunch of fish. But I did have another first, I got my first lake cutthroat. Not nearly as fun as the Lahotan's but still fun. And the views were just sensational. If it weren't for the snow I would live in the sierras. But enough of my talk, on with the pictures.

Is that the dreaded Black Pearl I see on the "high" seas?

Ed had better luck than me, I got 1 cut and he had a couple plus a brookie

Here he is again, fish on!

I caught this thing, any one know what it is?

One of the coolest things a father can do, in this meadow the grass is about 2.5 feet tall and wet as can be. So he carried Bethany I hoped I spelled her name right" his daughter til they found a dry spot for her to help out dad. Good going dad!

My guess is a Tui Chub. There a few in Silver Lake as well as Caples Lake.

Hey Ed and Scott!

Looks like you guys had a fun day. I used to hate getting my tipppet tangled in those Ranger buttons. I'm probably going to camp overnight on the 23th and get the evening hatch. I've got a canoe race at Donner lake this Sunday.

Hey Jeff,
the water is pretty low at the ponds, some areas were less than 6 inches. But there are enough holes to find the little guys in. I doubt I am going back up there again this year due to how low the water is.

Hey Scott, that pic made Beth's day :) , and put a big grin on my face as well, thanks dude!!!!!

Sorry I couldn't fish with you guys too long, that is a pretty sweet place. I'll have to get there earlier in the season next year.

I tried the meadow in Hope Valley, to no avail. My stealth skills have diminished, and there were too many Fry that kept spooking the bigger ones. I thought I was going to have a foul odor on me from there. But, I fished up by the bridge this morning. Surprise, Surprise!!! there are Cutts in that stream. I'll assume from the area that they are Lahontan, I landed three and two self re-leased, all in the 6 to 8 inch range. Also landed two real nice Bows, one about 9 to 10in, and the other 12 to 13.

C'mon you guys, I'm dying to know the name of Scott's mystery fish. I know someone here has a definitive answer. Is JT right? A Tui Chub? I've never seen one, but I have seen Whitefish, and that was my guess. Ed

JT knows his stuff...

It looks like a tui chub to me...I haven't seen too many in lakes, but they do resemble each other.

I guarantee it's not a whitefish. And although I've never caught a Tui Chub, I've only seen them being eaten by Lahontans in Pyramid, this photo off the 'net sure looks the same to me as that fish:

My bet's in the Tui Chub camp.
