Aloha, Luke and I had a great time at the Hotel la Concha. Sorry we missed Jay, but he set me up with some great fishing. This was my first rooster, the guide said 60lbs, but we never weighed it. Sorry the picture is sideways.

Luke had a great time, and caught over 20 species in all. Here is a rooster of his and a nice mahi he got.

I got this pompano on an 8wt, the guide said they were good to eat, and the hotel cooked it up for us that night.

Hey Mems,

Glad you had a great trip. How many windy days did you encounter? The roosters are #1 on my list of species. I spend a whole day just chasing them down. If I catch, that's great - if I don't, oh well at least I tried.

I hoping to go back in October for some yellow tail, yellow fin and marlin fishing. It's going to depend on the airline situation. How was your airline experience.

Looks like Luke did some hard fishing - I would say the rooster in the photo was around 40lbs. Maybe 45lbs. Who was the captain? You were suppose to have Marisio.

Thanks for the photo's

Jay

Don

Awesome!!! I'm so glad you scored so well on your first trip to baja! All your saltwater experience surely served you well. Those african pompano are delicious, I can see why el capitan was excited. Is that an 8wt youre holding with the skipjack? Thats a lotta fish for an 8!
Also, What are the details on that gorgeous rooster? Rod/Reel/Fly??

Thanks for the great report!!

Thanks guys, Jay M, I sent you an e-mail with details, it was a great trip. Jay bird, I used a TFO babyblue 10wt for the big rooster, and for most of my top water. I had a clear intermediate on the Ticr X 8wt rod and used a sardina with a weighted head for toro, pompano and skipjack. That skip jack hit a big fish deciever with a tandem hook rig. Many of the fish short striked the fly, and that trail hook just got eaten so quickly. After three fish it looked more like a needle fish than a bait fish, but still caught skipjack, aku. We call the ones over 10lbs otaru here in Hawaii, and they really fight hard. Too bad we didn't see any ahi, yellowfin. Fresh sashimi would have been good.
I think the babyblue TFO is the perfect rod for down there. You never know what will hit from ladyfish to stripped marlin and that rod is a pleasure to fish all day and still put the heat on a big rooster. The 8wt was fun but a little under gunned for the species you might encounter. We didn't break a single rod while there, so I was glad of that. I had a 12wt light duty rod, and it is a great rod and easy to cast, just for all day I like the babyblue so much better, and it is fun to give the fish an even chance. I hope the next time I will be able to fish with some of you guys. I think it is a great service Jay M is providing and the opportunity to go on hosted fish is wonderfull for beginners. It certainly is a great fishery. I pray it stays so pristine. Mems.

Hey Don,

I just glanced at the photo of the Sunset Bar. There must of been a real high tide during your week. Those white poles are usually exposed quite a bit and the walk way down to the platform is usually a 45% incline

I heard you met my buddy Jonathan. He's an island boy. Maybe some day we'll meet up with you on the beaches of Hawaii.

I took an aquaculture class back in the day at Davis (during college) and believe it or not pompano was pointed out as being a main driving force for developing the technology. It's considered very good eating and has or had high market value throughout the years and our government at the time saw it as being a good opportunity to make easy money. Of course, they never figured out how to raise pompano but other species were found to be quite suitable.

Jeff,.... my fishin' partner got two around the same size as the big one Mems is holding on our last trip. We took one back to the hotel and the Panguero kept the other (happily). They really were good eating..... :D :D :D

Aloha that would be a good idea to raise pompano in pens. We have Kona Blue over here, they raise kampachi, amberjack in pens. They are very good , but I like the wild ones better. Yes Darian, when we got into the pompano the other guides all showed up and tried for the same fish. I think they are their favorite to eat.
I got back on the water today and we got a bunch of ahi and I got a couple of mahi. It is good to be home! Mems.
