All:

Target flow releases from McCloud Dam for the instream flow studies on the Lower McCloud River were not provided exactly as planned in the angler announcement of June 16th. The following email describes what has been released (so far) and what is planned for the remainder of the June 16-25 study period. The major change for future flows is that higher flows are scheduled for Monday Jun 23 than originally planned (and slightly lower flows occurred on 6/18 and 6/19).

At Ah-Di-Na or MC-1 gage At Shasta Lake or MSS or MC-5 gage

6/16 Mon 660 declining to 620 880 declining to 870

6/18 Wed 520 declining to 480 800 declining to 730

6/19 Thu 440 670

Planned flows over the next few days are:

6/20 Fri 400 620

6/21 Sat 400 620

6/22 Sun 440 670 (to match 6/19 flow)

6/23 Mon 600 830 (to match 6/17 flow)

6/24 Tue 300 530

6/25 Wed 300 530

We apologize for any inconvenience the modified flow schedule has caused; representatives from PG&E will be available to discuss the reasons for the changes at the meeting in Dunsmuir (see below). We’ll also make sure to have the actual flow release information from today through the 25th so you can be certain of the flows you may have assessed. As a reminder, the flows are being released to study several different resources, but are primarily driven by fish habitat studies that need sufficient time at each target flow to conduct cross sections at several sites. Flow-recreation and other studies have opportunistically assessed several of these flows (and we are asking you to help with this effort regarding flows and fishing conditions).

The angler meeting on flows and fishing conditions is still planned for Dunsmuir City Park and Botanical Gardens on June 25th at 7 pm. The meeting will be held at the picnic tables next to the stage down by the river; there is nearby parking. You reach the Park and Botanical Gardens via Dunsmuir Exit 730 from Interstate 5. The Park entrance is just north of the exit (signified by the city’s swimming pool and an old train engine, which are visible). We will have pizza and soft drinks for participants that RSVP me at dougwhit@alaska.net before Monday June 23 about 10 pm. If you don’t RSVP, you are still welcome to attend (we just might not have enough food for you). We are sorry about having to schedule an evening meeting, but we thought we would have higher attendance since it doesn’t conflict with guide or work schedules. We expect the meeting to last 1.5 to 2 hours.

Finally, we also heard from a few of you that the website link we offered for more information did not work. We think the following ones will (and sorry for the error). Note however, that we believe the above email contains the most up-to-date information about expected flows.

If you have additional questions about the flows and fishing conditions meeting, please don’t hesitate to email or call. I’ll be in and out of my office until Sunday 6/22, when I start travel back down to the McCloud and then will be on the river (but will try to check email and cell phone messages Mon and Tuesday evenings).
