I spent the weekend with GBF camping up near Fuller Lake. We had our annual picnic and "one fly" tournament. I guess they just stocked the lake on Thursday, and the fishing was insane! A LOT of fish were caught on Friday.

For the tournament on Saturday:

MOST fish caught from 9 am to 12 pm on Saturday was 15 browns/bows in the men's category and 12 in the women's.

BIGGEST fish caught was 13" for the men and 11" for the women (by yours truly :D )

SMALLEST fish caught was 4" for the women, the men wouldn't state

I personally only caught 2 fish that morning, but got plenty of bites on my olive green wiggle tail nymph that I tied myself! :D

I actually used the same fly all weekend, and caught another 4 on Sunday, one of which was a 14" brown 8). Boy those guys are fiesty! One of them turned me around in my tube, and I think he was only 10" long! Paul caught like 12+...

All in all, we had a great time. I don't know if anyone checked the water temps? I didn't have a thermometer with me, or I would have...

Robin- We fished Fuller yesterday, and it is still kicking out a lot of planters. Normally I will dredge the deeper sections for the Brown's, but to my surprise I managed to land a 16" Brown in the weed growth up where the creek comes in. It must have just been cruising because it seems a little early for spawning activity. :D

I was up there too. Lots of planters raised and they were hitting everything. Word from the ranger there was they planted the lake last friday, but he thought they planted browns. I was screwing around with a stimulator and caught a bunch on top. Best fly for me though was a PT and a partridge soft hackle in the subsurface film. Given these were new planters none of this was surprising. Once the sun was off the water, the browns were biting. Got one on a bugger and one on a caddis near the edges in the NE corner. The creek is still sending water into the lake and it is still nice and cold.

Some highlights:

Go get'em!

May/June and October are prime months in many mid-elevation trout lakes.

May/June the fish are shallow with cooler surface temps plus more hatches then.

October they are feeding up on everything and anything with cooler surface temps.

PS: October on Davis Lake could be killer this Fall.

I was up at Fuller on Friday also. The fishing was crazy good. I had a lot of fun with my 3 weight and nymphs. Even managed to get a half dozen hold over browns in the 13-16 inch range.
