Well all I can say is DAVIS IS BACK!!!! I had as good fishing over the weekend as I have ever had at Davis!

Got to Don's Friday evening around 6:30 and we headed out for a look see - saw quite a few midges going and we managed to hook a couple. No blood midges showing.

Next morning we headed out around 7:30 - heavy smoke overcast from the fires

There were a few fish working the surface and sub-surface on midges and I started with a tandem rig of 2 midges and was soon into a couple of fish. Around 9:30 the sips on the surface turned to slashes. Did not see any damsels yet but you could just tell! We both rigged up and soon the action began in eanest

Don & Heidi - more on the dogs later :(

It worked just like it was suppose to and so often doesn't. Cast to a swirl and give a twitch and fish on! Many of the fish were not moving fast so if you got a cast near a boil they often slammed th fly!!!

Around 11:30 we hit the shore to let the dogs run and do their thing and we just waded the shore casting to fish and hooking some. The damsels were thick and just crawling up your legs. I mostly went with a tandem set up. Most of the damsels were the dark olive color with some of the golden olive bugs showing up the second day. The fly that worked best was one I described in an earlier post

got back in the boat and by then the wind was going pretty good. We anchored a short ways off shore and just fished to the waves of fish coming towards the boat.

Few fish under 12" and most averaged 15" to 17" with a few bigger fish. On day two I had 2 fish into my backing.

Quit around 2 and headed in.

Next morning same time - sky was much clearer and hotter out. Wind started earlier. Early the fish really were keying on midges and we hooked all on middges though we were using a tamdem set-up - damsel with a trailer midge. Damsels were a bit later but by 10:30 it was hot and heavy all the way until 2!

This is not to say it was easy. To add a bit of difficulty, Don brought his two German Wirehair's. Greta is 14 and blind. Heidi is younger and not blind and to say the least eager when you hook a fish!

Although blind, Greta has an uncanny ability to seek out coiled fly lines and either lays down on them or puts a paw on them just as you send out a cast.

Heidi is pretty good at this also but once you hook a fish she really gets active - whining and carrying on. When you net the fish she really wants to lick it or more likely bite it and really tries to muscle in. On the first good fish I hooked, just as I was getting it close she gave me a body block that almost sent me in - I body blocked back and in she went. So I handed the net and rod to Don and reached over to pull her in - she thanked me with a major shake tha soaked me and got dog slime all over my glasses!

I can't tell you how excited I am to see that Davis is back to it's old self!

I was very lucky to have been able to fish with Don, Rick and the dogs about 3 years ago at around this time.

That damsel fly fishing on the surface is very exciting.

Thanks for the good report Rick.
