a couple of friends and i are planning on drifting the american in kayaks mid-week next for some shad. any suggested floats/tips/advice. we are fairly novice paddlers but veteran anglers, this is our first season for shad. any help would be appreciated. many thanks in advance.

Well, don't stay in a hole longer than 30 minutes, unless you know the fish are there and just not ready to bite yet.

The best time to fish will be the first and last two hours of daylight.

If fishing the evening, fish very close to where you pull out, because you might be into double hook ups late in the evening. You do not want to float down the river when it is too dark because you could not put down the rod!

When floating down you will need a few different sinking lines rigged up for different holes. For example, you will need a "Type 4" for some holes and "Type 6" for others if the flows stay around 4,000.

You want to target holes 6 to 8 feet deep with gravel about 1"-2" in dia (give or take).
