I have been fly fishing for LMB in "farm ponds" mostly for the past 40 years with mostly poppers and hair bugs on top.
Being in the tackle business all that time to I have been lucky to be invited to many extremely private ponds that have great populations of big "dumb" bass. Not a lot of skill to catch them either.
I guess for me, I don't need to catch fish when I go out so I do things a little differently. I only want to catch them on top so I time my trip so I go when the conditions are best for top water LMB.
We do have a friend, Pete Peterson, who mostly only fly fishes for LMB and use 9 weight rods with really fast sinking line and big streamers for bass in the Delta and many Nor Cal reservoirs. Pete is on his second bass boat too. Pete catches bass most all year long and he does catch lots of big ones too. If I want to get information on sub-surface bass fishing Pete is my go to person.
Leo Gutterres is my go to "farm pond" guy and he fishes mostly hard bodied poppers on top.
Kevin Doran is my source for the top water only in the Delta.
