I caught this 22" Steelhead on the American this evening fishing an Elk Hair Caddis dry fly. The fish jumped three times!

Sorry for the poor quality of this photo. A lady walking her dog took the picture for me.

I saw only one other fish rise so I felt lucky to catch this one.

Great job and nice fish. I keep forgetting about the summer steelies with shad starting to enter the river system.

Now we have Stripers, Shad and Halfpounder Steelhead on the Lower American River.

In the high heat, morning sound like the ticket.

It did cool off nice tonight though.

Bill,

How long will these Halfpounder Steelhead be in the American? Through the end of May? June? Does it depend on the weather? I don't see them actively feeding like I did in March and April, but I have managed to get at least one strike every evening I fish.

Thanks,

Craig

They seem to be in the river almost year round.

I think when the water is over 75 degrees it probably is not a good idea.

That might be July/August some years?
