Name this snake

I can not remember which type of snake this is, it was rattling its tale and then started hissing at me like a rattler.

I would guess it was a gopher snake. They're known to "rattle" their tail and hiss, imitating a rattlesnake.

Man, I never understand hostility towards snakes... I can't stand em either most of the time but I do not feel the need to kill them, even rattle snakes. I feel privelaged if I run into any snake out and about because you don't see them very often.

THANK YOU! What's up with this 1800's attitude toward snakes? Especially Gopher Snakes? Harmless things with Anaconda sized attitudes. You gotta respect them, or they'll chase you down and make you.

You two should be ashamed of yourselves. I know a very prominent fly fisher and fly tier who has a genuine,real, giant phobia towards snakes, yet even he doesn't advocate the random killing of them because of what they are. Ed.............I deleted a whole bunch of stuff that on rereading didn't seem appropriate.

lol, i used to have a reticulated python that was rescued, until it got to about 12 feet and we donated it to a zoo....
