Hi all,

Just back from the Yucatan for a nice vacation and one day of fishing on the Bay of Ascension. First time Saltwater fishing of this kind for me. We fished from a lodge called Pesca Maya between Boca Paila and Punta Allen on the Caribbean side of the Yucatan Penninsula. See my prior post asking for information. Wind made sight fishing tough especially in the afternoon. Managed 8-10 bonefish to hand in a day of fishing. Had a ball and would definitely do it again. I found my delicacy of casting with my 8 weight could use some work. I managed to spook a few fish with sloppy casts. I guess casting big flies and indicators with heavy nymphs for steelhead has given me some bad habits. Most fish in that area are 2-4 lbs according to the guides with an occasional fish to 6 lbs. The biggest I caught was 4 lbs by my estimate and the guides estimate. We didn't see any permit or tarpon. I did catch one small jack crevalle and briefly hooked a small barracuda. These bonefish certainly do have a well earned reputation for toughness and reel screaming runs. I can't imagine how tough a 7-8 lb fish or bigger would be to bring in.

Just a couple pictures to cure the Winter blues:
