Interesting post on the spey pages - when swinging flies do you lead or follow?

I generally do a combination method I learned from Joe Howell many years ago. After the cast, I normally keep the rod straigtht out perpendicular to the river flow until the line hangs just outside the rod tip, then I flop the rod so it is pointing straight down river so am now leading a bit. Depending on the water and if I am out a bit in the current I may then move the rod so it is pointing towards the bank letting the fly swing all the way to the shore.

Some mention leading in the post and this kinda makes sense - if you go to the trouble to tie and cast huge 5" flies then to get the full effect it is best to use a grease line technique - ie lead the fly some to get it to swing perpendicular to the current for as long as you can
