I can't say that I'm surprised. In the late seventies, while hunting deer near Hell Hole Reservoir, in the Rubicon drainage, I sighted an animal that I was positive was a wolverine. It had the shape and moved with the gait of a badger, but was far too large to be a badger. The color was kind of a creamy tan. I got a good look at it, moving quickly across an open area at about 30 yards. When I mentioned it to the resident ranger, he just said that it was unlikely, that there hadn't been a confirmed sighting in many years.

This are is about 70 miles in a straight line from where the photo was taken in the recent sighting and is adjacent to a fairly remote and roadless area.
