I was driving to a field that normally has hawks hunting near Davis and on the way this red-tail hawk was in the middle of the road. I slowed down and pulled over as he just slowly walked off the road. I wasn't sure if he had been hit or not so i went out to see if he was alright, and from the looks of him he had no obvious damage to his wings or any other part. I decided to call the animal services, and while i was waiting i decided to take some pictures. He never once seemed at all afraid of me, and even as the lady from animal services put a net on top of him he never struggled. She took him straight to the nearby college that has a vet office, so hopefully everything will turn out fine for him.

All of these were taken with my d300 and 300mm f/4.

Obviously injured or it would never have stayed there. You made the right call, the U.C.D. Raptor Center is the best in the country for taking care of injured raptors. I picked up an injured Kestrel years ago, that's when I found out about U.C.D. Did they tell you what an injured hawk is capable of doing to you? I ended up with quite an education after my rescue. Hey Ben, Do you have the number for the center handy? I have taken birds to the Suisun center before but it would be nice to have the UCD # handy if needed. Thanks. Paul

We had an mocking bird in our back yard this fall that had an injured wing.

I was running around our back yard like a chicken or road runner?

I fed it and I think it somehow got better and flew away.

Now I am going to get a bird feeder out there so the local birds will have some food for winter.

I wonder if that was a young Red-tail Hawk?

Bill,
It was definitely a juvenile red-tail, although i am not sure how young it actually was. He was pretty big and looked like he was in good shape.

Yeah those Barn owls really take a beating on the stretch between Sac and Stockton too. I've noticed that when the hawks are keyed in on a target nothing short of an air horn will get their attention. The air horn always works, provided you can spot them in time. Ed
