10 of us just got back from a wonderful trip to 'Angler's Inn' on El Salto Reservoir, 1.5 hour drive out of Mazatlan, with Keith Kaneko of 'Angling on the Fly' travel service.
I believe Keith said the top water time was around November through February. We had wonderful top water action about 80% of the day.
We fished from 6:00am till 11:00am then broke for lunch and a siesta. Then we went back out from 2:00pm till dark.
The fish averaged 3 to 6 pounds on top with the best being 10# by Jim Christensen. Next was an 8.5# fish on top by Dan Vincent who had never fly fished for bass before. My best on top was just over 6 pounds.
The hot top water flies were Leo Gutterres' poppers in silver and in yellow which he generously passed out to everyone on the trip. Leo really ripped up those bass fishing top water all the time.
After the sun got high (10-11am) you could catch fish with a Clouser or Gummy Minnow on a floating line or slow sinking line. Mid-day the big fish were suspended at 20 feet according to the fish finders.
The lake has a 'gazillion' baby Tilapia and Threadfin Shad which make the Florida strain LMB grow very fast.
Many thought the new Sage LMB rod was the top pick for this trip.
I think this is the best top water LMB fly fishing destination in the world and it is best for top water in the winter.
The fishing is very easy so anyone can go on this trip.
It was $2200 for 4.5 days of fishing, 5 nights lodging, all inclusive trip plus airfare and gratuities. Around $3000 door to door.
