Fly fished the Delta for a few hours in the morning out of the inflatable kayak. It was a relatively cold, overcast, windy day. Decided to fish this fly I made up based on some flies recently pictured on Blanton's Board by a fella named Dave Sellers. It's tied with yellow dumbbell eyes on a size 2/0 Tiemco 600SP hook, .30 lead strapped to the shank, paired saddle hackles for the tail, a white rabbit strip body, white and olive bucktail with pearl flashabou and silver Krystal Flash mixed in, a red leech yarn collar, and an olive Crystal Flash over-wing. It is 5" long, and I had hoped it would work for both stripers and largemouths:

Turns out it works for both. :D I fished it on a floating line and a 7' leader in a narrow, relatively shallow slough. I retreived it with an erratic retrieve with lots of pauses. I mostly fished it off the weedlines on both sides of the slough, and first caught this striper:

And then caught this largemouth:

I ended up with 3 stripers and 3 largemouths to hand and had 4 other fish get unbuttoned during the fight. Biggest striper to hand was only 18" but still great fun on the 7 wt. Both the fish pictured above hit the fly while it was paused. I left when the wind got so bad it would blow me 40' out of position on each cast while I retrieved the fly. Ah well, it was fun while it lasted. Gotta love the Delta!
