My family will be staying at a friend's cabin over the thanksgiving weekend, and I am hoping to get in some fishing on the Upper Sac. How does the river usually fish that time of year? All the fish are wild there right? Any tips on bugs or anything else would be greatly appreciated, as it will be my first time on the upper sac. Thanls -Loren

I would call the 'Ted Fay Fly Shop' in Dunsmuir a week before you go.

The river has wild fish and hatchery fish, mostly Rainbows.

We have lots of information under REPORTS on our main menu then under the 'Upper Sacramento River'.

I imagine most would use 2 dark BH FB nymphs, #14 and #16 on 4x fluorocarbon tippet under an indicator with split shot added to get it all down on the bottom.

If its really cold and the water under 50 degrees I would fish mid-day.

My 2 cents, Fred Gordon's Amber-Wing Prince Nymph. Good luck!

Loren,
Like PGW said, try going with a big nymph, such as an october caddis pupa or a red fox squirrel nymph in a 6 or 8. Then go with something small as a dropper, like a bead head pheastant tail or micro-may in 18, or a zebra midge in 20 (or smaller if you like). That sort of combo usually works up there at that time of year.
It's worth trying a big stimulator or similar dry up against the elephant ears too.
Have fun and good luck.
