It was a dark and stormy morning..... a classic northwest steelhead day.

Herb Burton handed me a pimp and directed me to swing it through a long glide.

After a thousand casts and a thousand steps down the pool I landed this nice hen. Spent most of the day fishing a 10 ft 8 wt with an Airflo 40plus WF8F. First time trying this line, I really like how well you can single hand spey it. Came in handy because there was a lot of vegetation down to water line on some of the runs.

Another nice run for swinging flies.

Which resulted in a nice buck for my brother-in-law, Rich.

Broke out the Spey Rod on Friday and christened it with this small buck. I matched my 13'3" Gary Anderson #6 with a 9/10 VISION ACE floating shooting head with a Cortland Precision tapered butt running line. The tapered butt running line gives you an 8 ft fat butt that makes the head to running line connection more manageable with less hinging. SPG wrote several posts on this idea last year which he calls a "dragon tail".

Rich with another pimp-caught fish.

Just a georgeous time to be on the river.

Herb & Pat Burton own the Trinity Fly Shop in Lewiston, CA.

Herb is kind of the Dean of the Trinity River.

While guiding the river he promotes traditional methods of fly fishing for Steelhead.

Here at Kiene's Fly Shop we have been promoting Herb for many years.

Thanks for the wonderful report and great photos Cal.

Thanks for the report Cal. Looks like a great trip. Great pictures and that last one with the fall colors from the trees reflecting of the river and the guy casting... Thats a classic fall picture right there. Busy this weekend but back up next week for sure. Kevin
