What are your favorite steelie flies for the Trinity River. A friend wants to fish it and was asking me, but I have limited experience there.

Scroll back. There is a very long thread about what you are asking.

I just heard a tale of a guy tying a tree twig to a bare hook, then catching 3 adults on the Trinity with that twig fly....basically you just have to get the fly in front of the fish in the right presentation.

Fish what you have confidence in.

Big Buddha,

My two favorite flies are the Humbug (basically a peacock-body brindle bug) and variations on the hilton patterns. Check out Jeff Bright's webpage some time, there are some great ideas on that site. I tend to fish smaller flies on the Trinity, 6's and 8's, but those fish will pounce on bigger flies as well. The Muddler Minnow is another trinity pattern that is deadly, fish with a tip or skated on a floater.

I used to fish nymphs a lot on the Trinity but I've given that up for the swing. Any time-tested trout nymphs will work on the Trinity.

Good luck,

-John
