Hey Folks,

I finally got back out fishing for a day, my first such opportunity since that awesome Alaska trip about a month ago back now. While Alaska is pretty much impossible to compete with, California does have some very nice fishing opportunities as well. My trip was a day trip, slipped away from work last Thursday to go up to fish the Lower Sac in Redding. I had the opportunity to fish with Chris Dummond, who lives up there, has a nice little drift boat and was kind enough to extend me an invitation to float and fish with him which I eagerly accepted.

We had a great evening of floating and fishing and hooked a number of really nice rainbows that evening. I can tell you those Lower Sac Rainbows definitely don’t play second fiddle to the Alaskan rainbows I caught a month ago. They are big and strong and were a ball as we both had our hands full trying to get some of those to the hand. As it turned out we only got a couple to hand but we did hook a number of nice fish on a standard two nymph set up, with weight and an indicator. Here are a few pictures from the trip.

Thanks Chris for the great evening! I look forward to getting back up to fish with you again.

Those Lower Sac rainbows are just big, mean fish! Your report reminds me of the Alison Krauss song. "Lucky One."

Hey Bill, Nice fish! Looks like you floated the upper section from Caldwell down to Bonnieview? Nice pic of Sundial Bridge. I was up there Sat/Sun and floated a real nice stretch of water, from Balls Ferry to Jellys Ferry, with the height of our trip being the "Mudball Riffle" Lots of rainbows, however like you, we had a hard time getting them to the net! Also hooked three salmon, landed one. The flows are perfect, right now, for wading. I stay with a buddy of mine in Redding. He has a home on the water and a small cabin that he is remodeling and will rent to out of town fisherman. Great spot to have your first cup of coffee in the morning, from deck of the cabin. As he completes the cabin, I will get the word out. He even has a boat ramp for launching driftboats... If you need a partner, next time you go, give me a holler!

Hey Stroud,

Glad you enjoyed the report and pictures. You are right the flows are perfect for wading right now. I believe you are correct in the reach that we floated. What a terrific fishery :) . I would like to hit it again a few times this fall and would definitely be up to hooking up with you at some point. You being from Charmichael, we are practically neighbors :D . Sounds like you have a good connection up there.

Morning Bill,
I'll send you a message, next time I can get away to Redding. Sounds great! This weather is perfect for American River steelhead, have you been out recently?
