If you were in the hills friday morning you might have thought it was. My dad and i went up to fish the little truckee and had quite the adventure fishing in the snow. We arrived around 11, and the road into the meadow already had a bit of snow on it. It was a little chilly getting into waders, but with many layers on, i was quite comfortable. Here is what it was like when we first got there.

It continued to rain steadily for another couple of hours, but eventually it warmed up, and the bugs started hatching. They weren't thick, but there were enough to get some fish on top. We both caught a couple of nice fish, although it wasn't quite up to the normal little truckee standards. Here are some of the pictures from later in the day.

On Saturday, it was sunny and warm (relative to friday). Even though the sun was out, the fish fed all day on the surface. Early in the day the large size 18 bwo's came out, and after about 2 hours, the tiny bwo's took over. This was the kind of day you expect when you fish the little truckee in the fall, big picky fish on tiny flies and skinny water. I love big picky fish, and of course all fish were caught on dries, different stages of bwo's to be exact.

Great report... I was supposed to go up there with a buddy this weekend when he got sick at the last minute. I Have to admit I'm really jealous. This is the best time of year to enjoy the fishing in Tahoe, and you guys look like you took great advantage of it. 8) [/img]

Here are the flies i use for anyone interested.

CDC Comparadun. I use this fly for any mayfly dun, bwo, pmd, etc. This is the first fly, and normally the only fly, i go to if they are eating duns. For bwo's, i use sizes 18-22. Here is a size 18.

CDC loop-wing emerger. When i was fishing the yuba about three years ago i caught a pmd that was emerging, and when i got home i tied what i thought was an exact replica. I thought i had created a new fly, but i figured out later someone else had the idea before me. If the fish are really picky, or i am in skinny water, this is the fly i always use as my emerger. I normally use size 18 and 20 for bwo's. Here is a size 20.

Those two flies are pretty much all i use for mayflies on the surface, and so far they have worked incredibly. Sometimes, when the fish are not so picky, i will use a quigly cripple as the emerger just because it is easier to see.

Thanks for the patterns, Ben.

Have you ever had trouble with biot bodied dry flies sinking?

Have you ever had trouble with biot bodied dry flies sinking?

Not that i know of. For my cdc flies it is all dependant on the cdc being dry, and on other flies there are other things that could cause it to sink so i am no completely sure. Compared to dubbing it just seems logical that biot bodies would sink easier, but i think the difference is so small it doesn't even matter.
