Tristan called me to say he and his friend Chris (both members here) wanted to fish the Pit over the weekend and wanted to know if I wanted to go again. I said I’d go, but suggested one day might be enough on the Pit and we should maybe leave on Friday, I'd tow my drift boat and we could fish the Lower Sac for ½ day before heading to the Pit on Saturday. And if the Pit didn’t fish well on Saturday, head back to the Lower Sac and fish it again on Sunday. No argument there! :P

I didn’t have great expectations due to a cold front approaching (maybe it’s just me, but I don’t seem to do well on approaching cold fronts. Burney low was 25 degrees). But we left on Friday morning and fished the Lower Sac ½ day. We fished the Pit on Saturday, caught maybe 25 fish or so between us, and after an all day effort, all agreed it didn’t fish well enough to warrant fishing it again the next day. So we camped at the Pit and rose before sunrise to head down to Redding. Fished about 8 hours on Sunday before heading home. A fun, uneventful trip of 500 miles traveled and 28 hours of solid fishing or so with our only casualty being the two way radio Tristan donated to the river bottom... a small price to pay! :D

Some pictures of the fish we caught on the Lower Sac…

Were the fish on the egg patterns yet?

Some beauties you guys caught there.

I'd imagine the L. Sac is starting to pick up, this is a great time of year!!

When I said, "uneventful", I meant without incident, not un-exciting. Poor choice of words on my part, Jay. Uneventful, meaning bad stuff; broken rods, flat tires, dead batteries. Plenty of excitement and I'm not complaining it was ho-hum by any means. Like Tristan said, I did all the rowing, they provided almost all the catching (I fished when we stopped on the gravel bars). I forgot to mention that we had a double before one of them came unbuttoned. That was really fun while it lasted because they were both hooked while we were anchored in heavy current. They had to do the ol' "you go under, I'll go over" dance. :D

My wife and I drifted the Lower Sac earlier this week. Looks like the egg bite is just beginning as we found more than a few stretches of redds with salmon on them, and trout lingering behind in the buckets. Really nice to see after the less than stellar run of salmon last year. What was supposed to be a cloudy day turned into a very bright and sunny day, slowing the action somewhat.

However, we did manage quite a few hookups on egg patterns, and hook ups were especially plentiful during that last hour of daylight. Successful patterns earlier in the day were light egg patterns and superfloss stones. Fox poopahs, tan Z-Wings, and brighter egg patterns produced in the afternoon.
