Packed my camping gear and took off after work on Thursday and drove up to Klamath Glen - got there around midnight and crawled into the back of my truck - up at 5:45 to a light rain - loaded the boat and after waiting for a few boats getting launched -headed upstream a bit aftr 6:30.

River seemed a bit dirty down low still from the slide upriver but was hard to tell in the dark. River was actually in great shape - temps in the low 60's and much of the algae bloom had disapated.

Folks in at Starwin so continued upriver and pulled into Blue Creek above the creek. A few casts later I landed a nice half pounder. Two steps down and got slammed - around a 5# wild adult. 15 minutes later, I got slammed again - a 7# hatchery fish.

Went across the river and fished the other side with no success then went over to a small back channel and 5 casts later got slammed again by a good sized adult that came unbuttoned after a couple of minutes.

Up river I went and got into Strumps - lots of drift boats and quite a few hooking up but I had no success - the rain was starting to let up and I could see blue sky.

Around noon I pulled into the cabin to visit - Bruce's boat was there so thought he was at lunch but turns out he was off that day - 2 guys including my friend John Barrena (who went to Tarpon Cay with me) were due in at 5 to fish with Bruce. Mary Ann and Rod asked if I wanted to stay in the rec room rather than camping out - I thought for all of 5 seconds and agreed!! So unloaded my stuff and hung around playing with their dog for awhile and ate some lunch then headed out around 2. Got into Shady Alley with sun off the water and fished a steep bank where wading was nasty - got into around half dozen half pounders - thank goodness for the spey rod in this location!!

Lots of folks on the river with a number of camps upriver - missed out on a couple of my favorite runs due to folks hole-hopping me

Finally got into a nice run on the far side from where I normally fish as a boat was anchored on "my" side. Got a couple of half pounders and the boat finally left so I zipped across just as another boat was coming down. They pulled into the other side. Got a nice half pounder and a few casts later made a long cast that got slammed as soon as the fly hit the water - around a 6# hatchery fish.

Headed down river and ran into Bruce at Techtah - so I just got out and visited as John and hsi friend fished through to dark. That night I was invited to dinner - it was Mary Ann's birthday - great company and sure beat sitting by myself on the river bank!!

Next morning up early and headed up to Techtah. Bruce wanted to go upriver to Pecwan and try to get into a couple of runs before the camps hit the runs.

What a great moring again. It was foggy so the moon was covered all night ( a good thing I think!!). It took me 1.5 hours or better to fish through the run just once - ended up with around 5 half pounders and two adults - 5# and 7#.

Fished the otehr side with no luck and a couple of other runs also with no grabs - headed up river and could not find a run open - saw Bruce coming down - they had had a few fish with one adult lost.

Mary Ann invited me to lunch so we hung around for a bit and then headed out again - folks in Shady Alley so I went upriver and got into a couple of my favorte runs but nobody home. Back down to Shady Alley and again got into the half pounders. Finshed out the evening at Techtah wtih one half pounder.

Next moring I had to get off the river early - Bruce took his clients to Techtah and I jumped into Van Pelts right above the cabin - hooked 2 half pounders then back to the cabin and loaded up my gear and headed downriver - stopped at Blue Creek - lots of folks there but I had no luck so called it and got to the boat launch around 10:30 - there was not a parking spot to be found and trailers parked everywhere!!! Got loaded up just as the first rain drop fell and it rained pretty good on my way home - so likely would have been a good day on the river. Sorry - did not bring my camera so no photos to share

Well my next trip is maybe in 2 weeks and I am torn between heading back to the Klamath and going to the North Umpqua - a quandy I will need to ponder for awhile!!

Great report Rick and timely as well. My son and I are heading over to the coast mid week for a couple of days and we have been trying to decide on whether to fish the lower Klamath or Rogue. I think it's going to be the Klamath. I heard the nets are out of the mouth and the river breached the the sand bar that built up there recently. I also heard a big shot of salmon came in and I would think some steelhead did to. I'm not excited about the crowds on the Klamath though and I am concerned the big swells this week will close off the mouth of the Klamath again. Decisions decisions. :D

We we are in Florida now so maybe Terry Thomas and I will have some news from the warm salt water?

You are blessed Rick to have a great river you know well and good friends there too.

Great report Rick, I'm glad that you got into some nice steelhead. I bet that Mary Ann was happy to have good friends there to help celebrate her birthday.

This week should be great. Iron Gate was opened up a bit more yesterday adding another 350 cfs. The gage on the lower river dropped under 60 degrees last night.

A nice quandry to have. :) Which ever river you choose, take your camera this time and grace us with your photos!

Sounds like you really know and love the Klamath. I've never had an affinity for it, but enjoy hearing of your enthusiasm towards it.
