Since there are a few of you here that fish the rogue quite a bit, I want to ask you guys what flies do you normally fish?

Nymphs and Steelhead streamers both, which patterns?

Ugly bug with hot orange or copper bead #4 with lotsa weight and a tailer fly. Tailers can be almost anything such as a Lightning Bug, Prince, Copper John (all colors), Pheasant Tail, Hairs Ear, ect.
If I swing (seldom anymore) I like a GB Skunk, Egg Sucking Leach, Red Ant, Hilton, Bugger, ect.

Adam,

This is the only fly I use for both winter and summer Rogue steelhead. This is the bottom fly and the top fly is usually a weighted glo bug.

Hi Gordon,

Are you going to get out there?

Is that the same rig/system you use in New Zealand rivers?

How's that new house coming?

Bill,

First off the Middle Rogue has been virtually dead so far. Normally at this time of year over 6,000 summer steelhead over Gold Ray Dam but this year the count is about 3,700. Typically see lots of salmon rolling behind the house this time of year and so far have not seen a single rolling fish.

Yes this set up is just like one would fish on the Tongariro River in New Zealand.

Have a cash buyer for the current house and will be moving on 2 October to the new house BUT I have not lost my fishing privilages as the new guy is not a fisherman and is going to let me keep my pram at his dock on a permanent basis. Best of both worlds.

My favorite nymph for the Rogue is a #8 Prince Nymph usually followed by a heavily weighted egg pattern. Need some weight, unless the regs have changed, no split shot allowed.

I couldnt advise any better than Mark (Sculpin) I will add that I have caught more fish on my small bug this year than normal. Also, I have been swinging with the big heavy uglybug with good results.

Eggsucking leeches in small sizes can be deadly in sept-oct. Swung and dead drifted.

Are you coming up?

Jay, If I get some free time I'll be coming up. I'll let you and Mark know if I can make it up your way.

yeah, Sculpin is right on. I like to use an assortment of nymphs including copper johns, princes, pheasant tails. Ugly bugs are good also, (i caught my first ever steelhead on one up on the rogue). Eggs can be good also, but with the few salmon this year, there will definetely be a better fly out there. Make sure they've all got some weight, as you cant use additional weight, (like Frank said).
