Try to get out really early and late in the day too.

In the Fall the fish usually show up down around River Park/Cal-Expo first.

Some will index around the Watt Avenue Bridge area too. Mostly above the bridge for several hundred yards.

I just fish that same method as we use on the Klamath River.

Cast across the river, mend, swinging your fly downstream and across.

Then move down 4 steps and repeat.

In the AM and PM look for fish to "show" or "roll". If you do see something try to be above them and swing a fly right down into them. I usually twitch it as it enters their holding area.

We did have a couple reports down near the "Log Hole".

Call or come in if you need any help here.

Jeff Putnam usually has Steelhead seminars in the Fall on the Lower American River.

Bill,

You're right about them starting to show up. I caught my first halfpounder of the season on Sunday (about a 20" hatchery job) using the Dirty Bird I showed you on Friday. It was so thick I barely could get my hand over it's back. Jeff F. has caught 3 that size or bigger (one was wild) in the last week. Yesterday we fished higher up and it was just a smolt-fest.
