Thanks to Ed Wahl, I got my first taste of warmwater fishing in a creek on Saturday. Very strange to wade wet in 83 degree water.

Comfortable, though. 8)

More importantly, I spent the day laughing my ass off as vicious little smallmouths and green sunfish jumped on poppers, divers and streamers.

We even caught several squawfish (or were they hardheads??) but most of the squaws struck short on the long flies.

Although a 12-inch smallmouth can put a good bend in the 5-weight, the abundance of 7-9 inchers had me wishing I'd strung up the 3-weight, which I will do next time. I can live without the ability to throw moderate sized swimming frog for the increased mayhem that will come when one of those 12 inch smallmouths bends the smaller stick.

Thanks again, Ed.

I think we have a much bigger variety of fly fishing opportunities around Sacramento than most can imagine.

Ah, wet-wading a warmwater creek -- what a fun and relaxing way to spend a summer day. 8)
