Outboard motor question.

I recently aquired 2 small Evinrude outboard motors to poke around local lakes,and rivers.One is a 2h.p. the other a 4h.p. Although they are both 1985 models,neither one appears to have been used much.To be on the safe side I installed new water pump impellors on both.The man at the outboard motor place said that you could tell if the water pump was working by a fine mist coming out of the exhaust ports.Both motors appear to be working,however if you touch the exhaust cover while the motors are running they are extremely warm.Would anyone know how warm the actual motor should feel with it running,and the water pump pumping?
