Cody and I fished the Logan river yesterday and had a awesome time .
We both landed over 30 fish . Cody used his new TFO signature series 6' -2 wt. and I used my Sage VPS 9' 5wt. watching Cody fight some nice 12- 17 fish in fast water on his ( NOODLE ) looked like fun. He landed them just as fast as i did , but i thought for sure he was going to break his rod . But it held just fine. I think that 6' is a little short for me thought. I am thinking of a 7.5' 3 wt . I was wondering what you use ? What is your lightest rod ?

Thanks -
RobK.

here are a few photos of some of the fish Cody landed yesterday.

And the fly Cody ties that worked great !!

We still have some spring run off , but not like it shoud be. The Logan is considered flood stage at 700 fps. It's a very small river.

Those are beautiful pictures, Rob. I enjoyed the video as well. I've checked out the TFO 6' 2wt. It looks like fun. My lightest rod is a 7.5' 3wt. I use it on Putah sometimes. My biggest fish on it was a 23" rainbow. I landed it just as quick as I would have with my 5wt. Right now the flows op Putah are a little too high for the 3wt. As of this morning the flows were at 721 cfs (for irrigation).

Rob, GREAT report as usual! Appreciate you posted a picture of the fly that was getting them as well. Very nice fish -- based on this report and others, looks like you moved into a trout paradise!

That Logan River seems to be a total gem, nice pictures you're making me jealous.

rarely is the rod the limiting factor in landing a fish - you can usually put more pressure on a fish than your tippet will withstand no matter what rod you are using and in fact light rods help to protect light tippet.

I am not a big fan of very short rods but I use a 7.5 ft 2 wt for most of my spring creek fishing

The Logan has been on fire for about a week .

The Foam Beetle has been the best producing fly for the last two years .

Rob, I bought a TFO 7.5 foot 3 weight this spring and liked it so much I went back and bought another for my daughters! :D At $89 for the two piece at Kiene's they are a great buy.

That said, I wish I'd popped the extra fifty bucks to get one four piece version. I'm in Missoula again for work and just spent a nice evening on a mountain creek full of small cuts and bows that were all over most of the dry flies I threw at them. My four piece 5 weight was a bit over gunning since the biggest fish was under 10 inches. :o

The TFO and Echo 7'6" #3 line 4 piece rods are $139.00

Little rods are "too much fun".

I use a Chico Fly Shop 8 ft. 4 weight (moderate action) rod. My last two fishing trips have consisted of catching wild fish no bigger than 7 inches and they put up a respectable fight with that rod. Its a great weight to give very small fish a fight but it is also good at casting through wind and throwing large flies like big wooly buggers. Plus if you get a hold of that lunker you actually have a chance to hold it! That's my opinion... :)

In think they are a Native Yellowstone Cutthroat . ??

All the Upper tributaries on the Logan are closed until the second week of July to allow them to spawn in peace.

I think I will probley get a TFO 7.5 foot 3 weight like yours. A 6 ' rod like my sons is just to short for my taste.
