I had the pleasure of taking young Loren Elliott on his first shad trip yesterday. After getting him to my favorite a shad hole on the Russian R., helping him out with his terminal tackle, and a quick lesson on how to strip in the line, he was already into them. http://www.avitale.com/Laurenshad1.jpg
Lesson not quite learned, he lost his first three fish before I noticed that he was high sticking his retrieve. Apparently a left over from keeping trout off the bottom while fishing for browns in the shallows in a lake he fishes. With a little advice to keep the rod down and more horizontal he finally got to touch his first shad

Unfortunately I put my finger in front of the lens on this trophy shot below, but you get the picture. Fist shad to hand and a big smile. Yesterday was the first time I took a youngster fishing in 30 years. Just as much fun now as then.
