Can anyone comment on the upcoming Hex hatch for Lake Almanor this year?

Thanks

Lake Almanor should be very good this year. Fish should be on the bugs early. I guide and have a stillwater school up at Lake Almanor. If you have any other questions you can email me back.

Thanks Lincoln,

When might it start?

Bill -

The bugs should start coming off around the 18th. The fish should be on them very soon after.

Great Lincoln,

I have not fished the Hexagenia hatch of giant #6 mayflies on Lake Almanor but hope to some day with you.

The hex hatch at Almanor is an awesome experience, the Hexs come off in huge numbers.

There are plenty of hungry fish, trout, Smallmouth bass, and suckers to gobble them up. In one night I caught all three of the fish listed above.

Gregg caught a nice trout there a year ago.

I caught quite a fat trout there last year as well, sorry that this picture isn't better but I was by myself, and it was very dark.

I am looking forward to fishing the Hex hatch again this year. I only wished that the emergence started earlier in the evening. The emergence goes on well past dark/sunset. At sunset the temperature drops quickly, bring something warm to wear, also bring a flashlight, I like the Petzl headlamps that keep my hands free and points in the direction of my face.

I hope that you guys have fun with these giant yellow mayflies and fatty trout this season.

Adam -

The Hex is a treat and very fun. Check out my website. (Bill posted the Link)
I always look forward to not only the Hex, but teaching and watching clients/students landing nice fish.
Stop by the shop sometime or call.

Lincoln and his brother Lance are like family to Marilyn and I.

They are really fine guys and great anglers too.

The photo of Adam holding that smallie is one of my favorites -- just a beautiful fish. 8)

I didn't read any other posts to see if your question was already answered so sorry if this is redundant but I was just told today by a person who has a cabin up there that the hatch is ON right now! Bring your float tube/pontoon and fish right at sunbreak and sundown.

Would anyone like to share tying instruction for a good Hexagenia nymph, and a hex. crippie pattern. Thanks 8)

The Hex mayfly comes off in more place than we realize in West.

I guess it's right at sunset in most places.

Lower Fall River

Williamson River

Lake Almanor

Lake Natoma

Ponds along the lower American River

Where have you seen those big yellow bugs?
