I've been playing around with the idea of tying an up-side-down gurgler and have finally tied a couple that ALWAYS land hook up. Ive cast these things into the heaviest muck and they strip cleanly across. I can't wait to give them a try when the water warms a few more degrees. If they're as good as I think I'll put together some pictures and tying instructions.

I'll let you know in the next few weeks...

sounds cool. Check out the Hudson Bay Hopper. Basicly tied as an upside down gurgler but with a rattle and a few other extras. An east coast pattern but one of my go to muck/lilly pad patterns.

Hogan, I punched Hudson Bay Hopper in Google but didn't get anything. Do you have a website?

I have seen them at the fly shop and bought a few then tied simplier versions. Here is a decent pic from their on line catalog.

hard to see the top (foam) but it is a little different than a gurgler but uses the same idea.

Check out the double weed guard, very important when dragging this on the weed mats.

Adam, do you have any weight embedded in the epoxy? How successful is the fly in landing hook up?

Jerry, yes, there is weight under the epoxy. I haven't had much trouble hooking bass with that design. I've hooked some small bass that I would have thought before that would have trouble crushing the double weed guard, but they crushed it just fine. The beautiful thing about that fly is those weeds guards allow me to throw that fly deep into thick and heavy cover such as cattails, tress, and thick weed mats. The extra weight and the hard epoxy bottom can create a great "splat" on the water/weed mat with the appropriate cast. The smooth epoxy bottom lets the fly drag smoothly along the tops of the mats. Unfortunately the fly doesn't work real well with lily pads, but I hardly fish and places with lily pads anyways.
