Went out for a couple of hours after work and caught 2 halfpounders and 3 smolts. The halfpounders (15" and 18") were definitely Springers. Everthing took a Thunder Creek Special.
Thanks for the report Jeff. I was out yesterday for a few hours and only managed one smolt to hand and 3 other grabs. All my hits were on an Alevin. Didn't see any fish rolling around except for a couple of suckers. One of which looked as if was being chased by something larger. Stripes may be rolling in also.

As far as catching small to medium size Steelhead in the lower American River goes the next 2 to 3 months could be one of the best periods, besides Fall, Sept/Oct/Nov.
Low water is key here.
I would be looking around the area from the Nimbus fish hatchery downstream to the Sunrise Bridge.
Try small salmon imitations, egg imitations and caddis pupas and caddis dries.
Daylight Savings starts on Sunday!

I went out this evening. Three fish came up in front of me while I waited for the hatch to start. I got nada and didn't see much of a hatch either.

Went out last night too and got skunked. It sure was beautiful out and I didn't see another person until I was walking out after sunset.

Same here.....went out last Friday for several hours....one tiny smolt. Sunday evening went out again. Nada. But there was an idiot hatch of Dam builders out.
"smash rocks down and build dam"....neanderthals.
It sure was gorgeous out though. Except for a few mayflies, didn't see one caddis.

What the hell..... with all the encouraging reports I'll throw mine in as well,
went out last Sat with my brother in the morning near Goethe, a little late start, fished about 9-noon.... saw one fish rise.... covered a lot of water for a whole lot of NADA! Still a nice day though.

I floated it with a friend last Saturday from Sailor Bar to Rosmore. One half ponder swinging my Spey, and one under and indo while we drifted. Lots of fish coming up for dries at sundown, but we had to pack up and head out :(

Got out on the river yesterday afternoon with Jeff F. and Anglernut. There were a lot of solid grabs but only one smolt to hand. Jeff F. had a good day on Saturday. You know the old surf saying "Ya should have been here yesterday".

I got out on Thursday night from 6:30-8:30. I had several solid tugs and put two in the net. Both fish were 10-12", I did see some larger fish roll though. The caddis were coming off in decent numbers and both the fish I caught came on one of MSP's Carpet Caddis that I have from last years shad fly swap. Needless to say, that fly is getting pretty beat up.
If the weather stay nice it could be good over the next few days. Maybe I'll see some of you out on the river. Good luck!

I don't think the caddis have really started hatching but when they do it will be easier to find the feeding fish in the PM.
Maybe report "roughly" where you are fishing in your reports.
I would try up river from Sailor Bar down stream for several miles.
Low flows and warm weather will get those caddis going.
