View Full Version : Smallies on Cache Creek

Well since I can't seem to catch steelhead anymore I decided to take the long walk behind the house ( 500 yards or so) and give the smallies a try. The creek is at a perfect level and around 3 ft of visibility. The fish were bunched up all in one hole. Must have got 10 or so fish in about 10 minutes and LDR'd a 1/2 dozen more. All fish came on a hornberg. Did manage one smallish fish downriver a ways but no others. Was surprised to only get one Squawfish  Those things are usually schooled up and pretty aggressive. Here are a couple pix. My photographer didn't show, thus the hand shots!

I might have had better results but this guy seemed to like the spots I was fishing.

Nice work!

Great weather for fishing like that.

PS - did you hurt your ring and pinky finger. Looks like a pinch from pliers, vice or something?

Whoa, very nice Smallmouths. Gonna have to start driving around Yolo county again. You do know, don't you, that what you've just showed is more valuable than gold? Hell, I'd shoot you myself if I thought you'd spill the beans on your spot. Unfortunately I know it takes more than threat of imminent death to give those up. How are you on begging and pleading, I'm not above either of those. You need someone whacked? I might know someone. I don't wanna have to go to incriminating photos, but if if have to........ Ed

No Katz I was putting mortar between my flagstone on the patio and wasn't wearing any glove (whata dumb ass). Ate right through those fingers on both hands. They hurt so bad this morning I couldn't work on the patio so I went fishing. :-({|=

Ed, you are welcome to come this way anytime. I don't mind sharing. I'm not one that tries to keep my spots secret. Especially this one. The rivers and lakes I fish are pretty much well known by all, so if I get a fish or 2 I don't mind spilling the beans. What this means is no one should reveal any secret spots to me.

10 in 10 minutes?!? And just a short jaunt behind the house? Man, some guys have all the luck. Very nice!

I tiled my bathroom with the same result. The tips of my fingers eaten off by the Lyme, etc in the grout!!! Can't believe how that hurts, and not quick to heal.

Glad it missed the strippin' fingers!

Mike
Great report. Those are some nice sized smallies! What a treat to have it so close!

I am a tile contractor and can feel your pain. Thats why I fish mostly with big flies. I cant feel anything small in my fingertips cause the calouses from mortar/grout. 20 years of playing guitar didnt help either. :D

Jay

PS Very cute friend you got there!

MSP those are some beauts there. I spend part of my summer trying to search them out in the Russian, fun times. Hey if you need a photographer next time let me know. I have wierd days off sometimes but I would give it a shot. :) By the way I have always wondered about cache creek upstream from you in the Solono county parks areas. I am guessing the same fish are up there as well. But have never tried. Any theories?....Craig

Well Craig I have to admit I really don't fish the creek too often. I've lived here for about 1 1/2 yrs and have only fished it behind my house. I've only fished it 4 or 5 times at that. I don't know much about the upper sections. I did some exploring on the web a while back and found some info that talked about trout in the upper section before it hits the valley floor. It didn't sound all that great to me. Maybe they were hiding something

Well MSP I'm gonna jump on the "where is it" bandwagon too. I've lived in Woodland for a number of years and always wondered where a good access point would be on Cache Creek for some bass fishing. Would you mind sharing some ideas?

And GREAT JOB!!!

One word of caution if you fish Cache Creek. RATTLESNAKES! They aren't out yet but later in the Spring they will be out in force. Watch your step!

Ryeflyguy check your PM.

Hey guys don't trust this shifty MSP fellow, he might just send you to the county dump or something like that! Mike just wants to look like a nice unselfish guy by "sharing" his secret smallie spots. I mean really can you trust a guy who only takes pictures of his hand, really? Don't let him scare you about rattlesnakes, they actually have a sunny disposition just like little soft bunnies. Mike is only out to misdirect you or scare you off of his honey hole :D

He was actually fishing in Oregon........yeah that's right........Oregon. You guys go up to Oregon and have fun with those smallies.

P.S. Mike PM me, only me

Adam, you know me too well :D . Went out for a bit this morning and this is what I found.

If you're real lucky you might get a few of these!

And I was a little premature with my caution. Found this cute little bunnie behind the house. At least it was in the condition I like them best.

Hey Mike, that's not you right by the path is it? Interesting little creek you've got there. I'm gonna have to put in some more time there to learn it. I caught 3, lost a couple, and caught 2 of those rubber lipped things. I believe those are squawfish(sacrament pike minnow now), but if someone out there knows for sure please speak up. Here's some pics I took.http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/edfish333/IM001257.jpg[ /IMG] http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/edfish333/IM001260.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/edfish333/IM001262.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/edfish333/IM001258.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/edfish333/IM001259.jpg

Glad to see you found a few Ed.

Adam, I'm probably done for the year. I won't be able to take the dog out and let him loose anymore. I know what he would do if he ran into one of those bunnies that was still wiggling. Don't need a vet bill. In this case the risk isn't worth the reward. Besides that, I'm scared to death of those damn things!

I was just looking at the Delorme map, there's a helluva lot of stream to learn out that way. I'm gonna like this. Ed

Hey Jay,

I also have over 20 years of playing guitar but it hasn't seemed to affected my fingers in any way. I suspect your tile work may be the biggest contributor to your finger tip problems. :D In my opinion, combining some fishing with a little guitar picking is about as close to heaven as you can find here on earth :) . I would love to get together with you and do some of both someday.

Bill

Sadly, I have picked up the guitar only about 10 times in the last 5 years, I dont quite understand it, but the music just isnt in me anymore. I have never known anybody but myself that that has happened to. Thats not to say I wouldnt love to jam a little if/when we meet :D Jam a little and fish alot! :D :D

Thanks for the PM MSP :)

What are some good patterns to catch the smallies on Cache Creek? I was thinking some buggers... :?: Do you think it is still ok to bring my dog, with it warming up it seems a little iffy.

Hairstacker
03-15-2007, 11:49 PM
James, I haven't fished Cache Creek but I think you're on the right track with some size 6 woolly buggers in olive and black. I wouldn't go there without some size 2 3-inch long chartreuse and white Clousers either. And then there's various rust-colored, olive, and black leeches I wouldn't go without and I'd never go to any smallie water without some Murray Strymph variants. Anyway, I think decent smallie flies usually work well everywhere.

Ed Wahl
03-16-2007, 05:50 AM
'stackers right on with the Clousers, they get down fast and don't hang up too much. Carry some topwater stuff too, last time there I had them hitting a deer hair frog. Not much fun to cast on a 5wt but watching them come out to kill it was well worth the effort. Ed

Minnow patterns work real well too. Hornbergs and Zonkers seem to get their attention. Something around a size 6 will do.

As far as bringing the dog, I won't be taking mine out there anymore. If there happens to be a snake around he'll try and pick it up. Haven't seen any other than the dead one. Great place for dogs to romp though.
