Sooooooo, after all the salivating over the early start of the trout season did anyone hit it yet? What's the matter, all you all sane? Funny how ole Mom Nature works isn't it? All Feb. it's warm days, birds singing, bugs a buggin. Now here comes winter screaming back. If any of you nutballs out there did go out, what's it like? Don't want your secret spots, just maybe a little report, insects seen, any trout caught, that sort of thing. There's not much written about winter fishing in Ca. for the obvious reason that you couldn't do it. Maybe trout are gorging on ants, if they invade trout streams the way they invade my kitchen when it rains the fish should be obese. Hmmm, might apply to mice as well. Ed

Hello Ed, The best I can do is maybe a report from Putah next Wednesday or so. If the road is clear I may go to the N. Yuba. That is unless you have a better idea. Cheers, Paul

The roads are clear to the N Yuba, but Sierra City has received 4'+ of snow so accessing the river is the problem.Try below Downieville as access may be a little better.Jay

Ed,

Nutball #1 checking in.

I'll let the pictures do the talking as far a weather goes.

In my mind, conditions were ideal... not a fisherman to be seen all day with miles of river to myself!

This is actually the Trinity River on the 27th of February. The day after there was a fairly dense mayfly hatch in the afternoon. I caught several steelhead.

I wasn't part of the trout opener, but does my outing count? I was fishing for trout!

By the look on the deer's faces, I think they think I was nuts. But I think they're wimps!

Ron,
You are one hardcore angler.
I nominate you for Steelheader of the MONTH.

I've been enjoying the snow in a different way, but plan to take the rods on the next trip to the eastern Sierras this weekend.
