Last month quagga mussels were found in Lake Mead and then Lake Havasu. Here is a link to a DFG web page that has some information: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/quaggamussel/ and recomendations for transporting your boat: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/news/news07/07014.html

Quagga mussels are very similar to Zebra mussels which most have heard of in the great lakes. They are both in the same genus. Unfortunately Quaggas can actually live much deeper (down to 400'), in colder water and do not neccessarily need hard substrates. Both species are in the great lakes and they believe that the quaggas will eventually replace most of the zebra mussels. A couple of State Agencies are currently surveying to see how far the mussels have spread. Please be careful when moving your boats to make sure you don't carry any water around in the bilge or live wells. If you see any mussel/clam that is in freshwater and is actually physically attached to something like a dock, the side of a boat, an anchor chain, etc. please contact the Quagga Mussel hotline (866) 440-9530. There are currently no other freshwater bivalves that will actually be physically attached to something existing in California. Picture barnicles on a whale or mussels like you see in tidepools. The Quagga mussels are very small, smaller than a dime. Just one more thing to worry about! Thanks
