Here's a couple photo's of the second rattle trap design. The first one was tied half the size of this one. The one in the photo is tied on a 6/0 Dai Ichi hook and has quite a few stacks of hair.

Being tied larger, I've run into a few problems:

Won't sink as fast or sink at all. I think the number of packs of hair is one factor. The other factor could be the rattle tube. I might try wrapping lead on the front portion of the shank. Maybe I'll coat the hair with GE Silicone II to see if will help the sinking feeling

the last one in the vise has more color, a tail and a red front underside. With some lead wraps.

Any Ideas??????

Coating deer hair w/ silicone WILL NOT help it sink .

Guess how I know this ? :)

6/0 is a pretty hefty hook .......

Steve,
How much smaller in size is the 2/0 and 3/0 as compared to the 6/0. I'm tying up some Zara Spooks on the 6/0's right now. I'll probably run out of deer hair before I complete this fly. I tried contacting Bill at Angler's sports to order a 100 of each size for my bass flies. I'll still tie on the Gamakatsu's B10S style hook.

David- I'll be if I add some tungsten power to the silicone it will make it sink - what do you think

Hi Jay,.... Great looking fly. How about making it a floater/diver with a lip :?: :?:

I'm with David on the silicone thing. I'd think it would seal up the ends of the hollow deer hair and create a bunch of small floats. :( :( That combined with the rattle equals a bobber....

I'd suggest loosening up the stacks of deer hair to allow faster water penetration and use a lead strip (flat) on the hook shank.... The only other suggestion would be a heavier hook (don't know if that's practical, tho). :? :? How about drilling a tiny hole in the brass rattle case :?: :?: :?:
that would allow water to enter the rattle.... :? :?

Steve,

Thanks for the info and photo chart. I kept starring at the fly with the red band and was wondering why it had a band aid wrapped around it. Then upon closer review, I saw that it was a cigar band.
My fingers sort of look like the cigar fly, except the bandaids I have on my fingers are from slicing dicing deer hair.

Sticking with the Zara spooks and hairy crank baits for now

Thanks

jay,

Have you considered tying an articualted version? Here is one with a lame trim job, but you get the picture.

Mike,

Here's two versions of my Zara Spook that I tied a couple months ago.
The red head now has a 2" articulated body. I'm also tying the Zara in 3 different colors

I'm working on a hard (hair) body top water that will chug the surface. I has a dished out face

More too come
