I think I can wrangle a hall pass next week to try my first ever steelhead trip. Can anyone suggest proper tippet size and flies to use? I'll have a 7 wt with me. Can go with a 9 wt if that would be a better bet.
Also, any general areas on the AR?
TIA.

Thanks Tristan. Everything I have is from Kiene's :D Well except for the 9 wt and the 3 wt and the other 5 wt... But my 7 and my new 5 wt is from them!
I talked to Andy a few months back and he recommended some patterns. I'm just curious as to what people have had luck with lately.

Fox poopah and the egg you can't go wrong with. If you tie your own flies tie up those poopahs or other steelhead nymphs with some heavier wire hooks or ask Bill if he has some with heavier wire. A 10-lb steelhead and a stock "umpqua" tied #12 fox poopah on a 2302 tiemco hook is a combination that can result in the loss of your first big steelhead to a bent hook. I love those 2302's but they were meant for trout not 10-lb winter steelhead!
Tristan...been busy I'll try to send out those leech patterns this weekend sorry for the delay!

I tied this fox poopah for steelhead using a Mustad R90 salmon/steelhead nymph hook size 12. This hook is 4x strong.

Thanks for the tips guys. So on the tandem rig, would the poopah be the lower fly or would the egg be the lower one. Which one do you think the fish hit the most? The egg or the poopah?
Thanks again and I think I'll be out there around noon on Thursday. Hope to see you guys out there.
